Music Theory & History

Music theory and history are part and parcel of piano lessons in the early and intermediate phases of development. For students who are ready to explore these subjects separately, specialized one-on-one instruction is offered in advanced concepts such as writing chorale harmonizations, analyzing scores, and the study of musical traditions across centuries. All music theory and history instruction occurs online.

Students may choose to prepare for exams administered by the Royal Conservatory up through the ARCT level. It is important that you talk to us about your level of experience, particularly in theory, before signing up for any exams. In the silent video above, instructor Gregory Millar completes a typical exercise for a Level 9 candidate.
