Community Events

The Etobicoke-Mississauga Branch of the Ontario Registered Music Teachers’ Association (ORMTA) will be hosting two virtual events during the month of March.

Event One: Assessments (March 6-7)

The Assessments (March 6-7) are open to students of all levels. Pre-recorded videos will be live-streamed on Zoom and evaluated on the spot by a live adjudicator. Students will receive comments live and a mark in written form. This year’s adjudicator is Dr. Joseph Ferretti, Senior Examiner for the Royal Conservatory of Music and piano faculty member at Wilfred Laurier University.

The Assessments are an opportunity to receive feedback from a professional other than one’s primary instructor and can serve as a helpful stepping stone to those who are preparing for RCM Exams. Additionally, students who score an 84 or above will be invited to participate in the virtual Branch Competitions in May — a fun-spirited event in which top finishers are awarded monetary prizes.

To participate:

  1. Email Lisa R. before February 12th.
  2. Download and attach a signed copy of the following form to your email:

  • February 12th: Studio Deadline to Register with Lisa R.
  • February 26th: Studio Deadline to Submit a Video to Lisa R.

Event Two: Piano Solos Master Class (March 28)

The Piano Solos Master Class (March 28) is open to students studying in Levels 8 and higher. Live performances will be streamed on Zoom and commented on by a master teacher.* This year’s instructor is Dr. Brett Kingsbury, Assistant Professor of Piano in the Don Wright Faculty of Music at Western University. Dr. Kingsbury provides helpful insights to late-intermediate and advanced learners in a non-intimidating manner. This event is useful to anyone who is preparing an advanced-level RCM exam or is looking to take their current repertoire to the next level.

To participate:

  1. Email Lisa R. before March 19th.
  2. Download and attach a signed copy of the following form to your email:

  • March 19th: Studio Deadline to Register with Lisa R.

*Please note that on February 8th, the format of this event changed from pre-recorded videos to live performances.

Happy Holidays

Student Feature

Thank you to Andrew Ganea for sharing this wonderful video of his latest project! This past fall, as part of his high school physics course, Andy built a copper pipe glockenspiel. In order for the instrument to sound properly, he had to cut the pipes very precisely and test several types of mallets. Listen to the beautiful tones created as he plays, “Joy to the World.”

Andrew is in grade 11 at The Woodlands Secondary School. He studies piano and history at the Royal Conservatory of Music Associate Diploma (ARCT) level, having recently completed requirements in theory.
