Originally from the suburban-Montreal borough of Lachine, Gregory Millar has over 20 years of performing experience as a soloist, chamber musician, orchestral pianist and accompanist. He is also active as one half of the Millar Piano Duo with his wife, Lisa Raposa Millar.
Gregory has excelled in the subject of music theory since his undergraduate studies at McGill University, where he won “Best Chorale Harmonization” in a friendly classroom competition held as part of the course “Tonal Theory and Analysis I”. (The coveted prize was a Chia Pet!)
More recently, Gregory was engaged as a Subject Matter Expert (Level 9 Harmony) for the Department of Digital Learning of the Royal Conservatory of Music. He also worked for the RCM’s Teacher Certification Department as an engraver/music typesetter.
In addition to his performance and teaching activity, Gregory finds a creative outlet in arranging and composition. His recent work includes transcriptions for piano four-hands of the Canadian National Anthem as well as music by Fauré and Puccini, and arrangements of music by Gershwin for clarinet and piano. Original compositions include the tongue-in-cheek Rosedale Rag, for solo piano, and a witty set of variations on Happy Birthday mimicking the styles of various composers. Gregory holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY. He also earned a Master of Music degree from the University of Toronto, an Artist Diploma from the Glenn Gould School, and a Bachelor of Music degree from McGill University.
